Youth Engagement
Getting our young people involved in the tribe has become something of a challenge in recent years. To respond to this, nearly all of our current initiatives are designed in part to engage younger people. In addition, we have a few programs that are geared specifically toward bringing youth of all ages back into the fold.

Our Agenda:

Summer Day Camp - we plan to revive a very successful program that ended over a decade ago. Borrowing from and improving upon concepts from the original camp, the new camps will feature innovative learning experiences in Piscataway history and culture, science, and mathematics without the “classroom feel” that makes young people dread traditional summer schools.

Piscataway Princesses and Ila - Native people have a long tradition of bestowing the title of ‘Princess’ on young women for demonstrated character and achievements. We are introducing a similar honor for young men, who will be designated ‘Ila’ (which translates to ‘Warrior’). Princesses serve as informal ambassadors for the tribe, representing us particularly at non-Piscataway Native events. Ila serve a similar role, often participating as Head Young Man dancers at Piscataway powwows and representing the tribe at non-Indian public events. Princesses and Ila hold the title for one year, and receive special items to wear on their regalia to signify their status.

Tournament Series - sports provide lasting bonds and a unique sense of camaraderie, and we plan to capitalize on this by phasing in a series of sporting tournaments and contests to include both Native events (traditional lacrosse, archery, orienteering, etc.) and non-Native events (flag football, basketball, dodgeball, etc.)

Piscataway Fine Arts Exhibition - this annual event invites participants of all ages, but includes a special youth category. The exhibition showcases the enormous artistic talents of our people in every category including fine, functional, performance, wearable, and street art, offering prizes and honors to the most compelling works.
