Historic Site: Kent Island
Kent Island, situated between Maryland's western and eastern shores, had an indirect
but profound effect on the Piscataways. The island was established by European traders
as a way to trade directly with northern tribes without having to go through the trade
hub at Nacotchtank. Natochtank was an enormous village whose people were under the
protection of the Piscataway Tayac. It was located in present-day Washington D.C.
The Kent Island post had numerous consequences, severely weakening the Necostans and providing distinct military and resource advantages to tribes in the north who would eventually harass the Piscataway to the point where many were forced to leave the state.
