Healthcare
Nothing is more important than the physical health of our people, but unfortunately we face great challenges
in this arena. Like many Native people around the country, we face enormous problems with diabetes, obesity,
cardiovascular disease, and an array of mental health issues that often go untreated and even undiagnosed.
Adding to the problem is our lack of state and federal recognition, which cuts off access to vital healthcare
resources and minority government set-asides. Our healthcare agenda addresses the daunting task of bringing our
people to a state where a Piscataway in good health is the norm rather than the exception.
Our Agenda:
Native Lifestyles Program - most chronic Piscataway health problems can be traced to poor diet combined with a lack of exercise. The Native Lifestyles Program brings us back to a healthy place with a series of workshops that educates our people on the traditional Native diet, and ways to incorporate exercise into overcrowded schedules. The eastern Native diet revolves around the Three Sisters – corn, beans, and squash – supplemented with fish, fowl, venison, and wild fruits and vegetables. All these elements combine to create what today’s nutritionists consider one of the world’s healthiest diets.
Health Awareness - many of our health issues stem from the fact that so many diseases go undiagnosed. Health screenings can be intimidating and even frightening, particularly for those without insurance, or those who haven’t seen a doctor in a long time. Our health awareness program aims to educate our people on where and how to obtain free health screenings, take preventative measures against common ailments like diabetes and high blood pressure, research health information on the Internet, and find affordable health insurance.
