Elders Council
The primary purpose of the Elders Council is to process applications for tribal enrollment -
verifying the applicant's genealogy and their historic connection to the tribe, and otherwise
ensuring that claims of Piscataway lineage are legitimate.
The council serves in other roles as well. It is often a mediating body and arbiter of disputes between members of the Tribal Council as well as individuals in the tribe. Members of the Elders' Council also serve as informal advisers to the Tribal Council as a whole, and individual members thereof. The Elders Council is also to serve a pivotal role in drafting and ratifying a tribal constitution.
The Piscataway Conoy Elders' Council, which had been defunct for several years, was reinstated on October 11, 2009 by an emergency community session. The current members of the council are:
Sharon Brady-Franklin
Delores Curry
Lolita Harley
Morris Newman
Betty Proctor-Armstrong
Sandee "Peaches" Proctor
Gertrude Savoy
Several members of the tribe are involved in efforts to replenish the Elders Council so that it may effectively fill its vital role to our people once more.
